Internet Safety

Teachers are required by state and federal law to teach Internet Safety to students at EACH grade level.   First, we must know the issues, the dangers and the solutions.  Here are some resources that will help.

Online Privacy:  The Electronic Privacy Information Center publishes a list of resources for protecting your online privacy.  http://epic.org/privacy/tools.html

Identity Theft,    Spyware,   Phishing,    Social Networking,    Online shopping,  Peer to Peer (P2P) file sharing

Our students are most probably involved in these activities.  How can we help them be safe?  Most technically savvy students think they are too  clever to be taken in by scam artists or predators – after all, they know more about the digital world than most of the adults around them, right?.  The hallmark of the teen brain is that it is willing to take risks, the rewards seem great with minimal danger – especially when it is just the computer in the room with them.

They often do not know when they have downloaded Malware/Crimeware. They are focused on the songs/ games/videos they want and do not realize that they are allowing code to be inserted along with the “Free” downloads that can gather information stored on the computer as well as track what they are doing.
There are also excellent educational materials for educators and parents at iSafe.org.  HHS teachers can earn recertification points for completing the Personal Safety module as well as the other modules.  Upon completion of modules, teachers have access to lesson plans, activities, & educational materials for their classes.
